Equilibrium Fitness for Women is a San Luis Obispo, CA based health and fitness company designed by the experts, with the health of the community in mind. Equilibrium ensures results and success through exceptional consumer service, on-going support and guidance, individualized fitness and nutrition programming, and a dynamic small-group training environment. As a company, Equilibrium provides a supportive and rewarding environment for its employees. We strive to encourage personal growth and provide continuing education, long term support, and job security to our family of employees.
Equilibrium Fitness for Women was originally founded in 2004 as The Studio Fitness for Women and was rebranded as Equilibrium Fitness for Women in 2006 upon its purchase by current owner, David Pomfret. We are a full-spectrum fitness facility that is family owned and operated. Training for men and couples is available at our off-site facility through Equilibrium Fitness, Inc.
In addition to a full line of free weights, resistance machines, cardio equipment, circuit training, cycling room, and spacious exercise studio, Equilibrium offers members an approach to overall fitness. This includes access to metabolic testing, education, nutritional counseling, and a team of experts to help them reach their fitness goals.
We also offer a large variety of Group Exercise classes. From Zumba to Yoga to Les Mills Body Pump, there is a class that is right for you and your goals.
Equilibrium Fitness for Women is focused on the needs of women through all stages of life. From brides to moms-to-be to baby boomers, Equilibrium helps women stay healthy, balanced, and fit through each transition. Our Bump and Beyond program encompasses prenatal, postpartum, and Mommy and Me fitness, and helps women have stronger pregnancies and faster postpartum recoveries.
Our staff is dedicated to helping you achieve your health and fitness goals in a comfortable, friendly, and encouraging environment. We understand that everyone has different needs, obstacles, and goals; therefore we have specialists to assist you every step of the way. We are available to assist you with exercise programming, weight management, post rehabilitation, and a training plan for any goal.
David’s work in the sports and fitness industry has spanned the last three decades. Following an extensive athletic career in track and field, David specialized in the pole vault at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA where he received a B.S. in Biology. David moved from his home state of New York to the small city of San Luis Obispo, CA in 2001 to continue his pole vaulting career and pursue a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology from Cal Poly State University. During his time as a graduate student, David spent two years managing and revitalizing the PolyFIT Exercise Testing and Fitness Prescription Program at Cal Poly.
While falling in love with San Luis Obispo, David spent the next five years developing a successful personal training business with clients ranging from teenage athletes to 70+ seniors. Following his passion to educate and inspire, David was hired as the Head Assistant Track and Field Coach and part-time faculty instructor at Cuesta College. David has been able to mentor aspiring student athletes and facilitate their access to scholarships and four-year universities through his comprehensive training and conditioning programs.
In the fall of 2006, David created Equilibrium Fitness, Inc. and purchased The Studio Fitness for Women. David saw purchasing The Studio Fitness for Women, Inc. as a unique opportunity in the health conscious community of San Luis Obispo. Additionally, it was a great place to launch Equilibrium Fitness for Women, a comprehensive and integrated weight management and performance program that promotes total wellness by nurturing the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. Additional personal training sessions are held for men, women, and couples at off-site facilities.
in 2012, David married his wife, and business partner, Brittany Pomfret, and in 2015 they welcomed their son, Samson. Brittany and David run Equilibrium Fitness for Women together, maintaining the family atmosphere that makes Equilbrium the tight-knit community that it is.
David’s clients benefit from his exceptional knowledge, expertise and professionalism, and his ability to deliver safe, effective and creative training programs. His philosophy of training the whole person ensures a truly excellent experience for all of his clients.
Brittany is a fourth generation San Luis Obispo native and relishes the opportunity to change the lives of the women of the Central Coast through health and fitness. With a strong background in dance, Brittany has always had a passion for movement. While completing her Bachelors of Science in psychology from Cal Poly, she fell in love with group fitness and began teaching group exercise.
After becoming certified in numerous fitness disciplines, including Pilates, Yoga, Body Combat (cardio-kickboxing), Body Flow, Body Step, Body Jam, and Body Pump, she became a certified Personal Trainer in order to pursue her love of fitness on a more intimate level.
Brittany excels at working with clients during life’s biggest changes. From brides to moms-to-be, Brittany fell in love with creating balance and health for women whose lives were transitioning. After pursuing doula training, she realized she could meld her passion for health and fitness along with prenatal and postpartum well-being into a program that could help moms and moms-to-be have stronger pregnancies, easier recoveries, and greater levels of fitness after baby.
Her clients appreciate the personal connection and whole body wellness that Brittany promotes. Brittany has a unique ability to make any client feel comfortable (even her teeniest 3 and 4 month clients during Mommy and Me), while helping women achieve real results that last.

It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing that Equilibrium Fitness for Women will be closing permanently on October 31st, 2023. We have reached the end of our lease and have not been provided an option to extend our lease from the landlord. After 26 years in the Marigold Shopping Center, with Dave and Brittany having worked here 17 years and 18 years respectively, this will be our final month.
We want to say thank you to all of our customer service staff, personal trainers, and group exercise instructors over the years. Your energy, enthusiasm, and love for our community made Equilibrium Fitness for Women possible. We would like to extend a special thank you to our amazing Leisha whose tenure here goes back all 26 years.
And to all of our members past and present, thank you for allowing us to serve you and for supporting our small business. Each of you has made EQ into a beautiful community we are proud to be part of.
We have bittersweet and mixed emotions about the end of this chapter of our lives. We feel very fortunate to have been the stewards of this business. Within these walls we strove to create a safe, welcoming, and uplifting atmosphere where we grew so many wonderful relationships. This is where Brittany and I first met, fell in love, and raised our babies. This is where we shared so many major life moments with members and staff alike. From proms and graduations, to engagements and weddings, to births and retirements, we have gotten to experience many of life’s greatest moments with you.
However, despite all the wonderful times, the past three and a half years have been the most financially and emotionally challenging years of our lives. We have been navigating the pandemic closures and restrictions while carrying very expensive operating costs and ever-rising expenses. While we have great sadness to be moving on, we are excited to embark on new ventures to serve the fitness community here in San Luis Obispo.
Future plans
For the past two years we have searched extensively for real estate opportunities to scale and relocate EQ. Unfortunately, we never located the proper space that was financially feasible. But we are excited for the future because we have found several strategic partnerships that will allow us to move some segments of our business to share space with other small businesses.
Our personal training services will be moving to Fitness Edge at 795 Buckley Road. Dave and Leisha will be offering appointment-based personal and small group training in a wonderful studio.
Brittany will be launching her own business, Kismet Fitness at the Public Market, sharing the Nexus studio. Kismet Fitness will feature the programming Brittany’s followers have come to love, in classes that are made specifically for women and non-binary people. Lead by Brittany, this programming will be a whole-body fitness program that evolves class to class, utilizing weights, steps, balls, and bands to increase cardiovascular health, mobility, and strength. Prenatal and postpartum specific classes will be available as well. There are countless connections that have been made in Brittany’s classes, and we feel it’s kismet that each of these women have come together to support and strengthen themselves and each other. Brittany is thrilled to have found such a unique space in the Public Market with Nexus and can’t wait to continue cultivating our community.
While we will not be able to relocate all of our group exercise programming, we are actively working to help find new opportunities for some of the programs you love. Cardio Beat will be coming to Performance Athletics on Broad Street. Denise, with the support of Kathy and Katie, will keep you dancing and smiling in an exciting new space. Stay tuned for more details.
What will happen to my membership?
We hope you will stay will us through our final month to make the most of the facility and all of our classes. Not only will this help us complete our remaining financial obligations, such as payroll and rent, but we want to use the facility to its fullest while we still can. It is our intention to run our full schedule through lunch time of Halloween.
All memberships will be terminated as of October 31st, 2023.
Monthly Autopays: If your membership bills monthly, we will prorate any final membership payments billing after October 1st. For example, if your membership normally bills on the 10th of the month for $59.99, you will only be charged $40.63 for the 21 days from October 10th to the 31st.
Prepaid Memberships: If you have a prepaid membership, we will prorate and refund the remaining unused credit either directly to your credit card or by check, depending on how you purchased your membership. Expect these refunds to post in the last two weeks of October.
Trial memberships: If you are on a trial membership that will expire before October 31st but you would like to continue with us until the end of the month, we can offer a prorated standard monthly rate or punch card.
Equipment Sales
Virtually all of our Group Exercise class equipment will be making the move to the Public Market for use by Kismet Fitness, but we will be selling most other equipment including bikes, ellipticals, treadmills, weight machines, etc. If there are specific items you are interested in purchasing, please let us know and Dave can provide pricing. Purchased items will generally not be available for pick up until after October 31st. Delivery options may be available.
Thank you again for being part of our EQ family. We’ve poured our heart and soul into this business, and we look forward to the communities we’ve created here growing and thriving in new spaces.
With Love,
Dave and Brittany Pomfret
